President Donald Trump said he expects to fire Cabinet members after Republicans experienced blistering losses in the 2026 midterm elections, though he didn’t specify who.
In a preview clip of Ross Douthat’s interview with Trump on CBS News’s 60 Minutes, Trump was asked if he was going to fire any Cabinet members after the Tuesday results.
“I love my Cabinet. I think they’re good, but I’ll be doing maybe a few changes. I don’t want to mention who,” he said.
His appearance on 60 Minutes is the first sit-down interview since the major losses suffered by Republicans in the midterm elections.
One of those “few” was former White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, who is transitioning to a role in Trump’s political operation and was replaced by Stephen Miller on Friday.
One of the most controversial members of Trump’s Cabinet who has been floated as possibly being on the chopping block is Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, primarily due to his role overseeing the war in Iran, which has been widely blamed for the Tuesday defeat. Trump said he still has confidence in Hegseth when asked by Douthat.
“Look, we’ve won two wars. We’ve won Venezuela and have taken out billions and billions and billions of dollars already, and we will be taking out many billions of dollars and get along very well. And you could call it a territory, you could call it whatever you want. We won that war in less than one hour,” he said.

When Douthat asked if Trump credited Hegseth with the Venezuela victory, the president said he didn’t, but that the war secretary played a role.
Wiles was Trump’s first Cabinet-level departure since April, when he fired Attorney General Pam Bondi. A month prior, he fired Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard resigned in June, and Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer resigned on April 20 following allegations of workplace misconduct and misuse of federal resources.
