Californians are facing a litany of issues, from high taxes to unaffordable housing to gas prices. In West Hollywood, leaders have finally decided to deal with a major issue facing their residents: giving legal benefits to throuples.
The West Hollywood City Council unanimously approved an ordinance recognizing the legality of polyamorous relationships, allowing people with multiple boyfriends and girlfriends to enjoy many of the same benefits as married couples. This includes extending hospital (and jail) visitation rights to all of one’s “partners,” as well as expanding tenants’ rental rights, so long as your consenting, non-incestuous group registers its relationship with the city. (Yes, even West Hollywood has some standards, it seems.)
West Hollywood is not extending the full complement of legal benefits to polyamorous couples that it extends to married couples, but this does push the ball forward in a way that liberal media have been bizarrely interested in promoting in recent years. West Hollywood leaders quite humorously painted this as a win for affordability, given the tenant protections that will be enforced. As it turns out, the thing really holding Californians back from housing affordability is their reluctance to enter into group relationships.
West Hollywood is the boldest so far, but it is not the only city that has tried to encourage legal threesomes (or more) through legal protections.

In Massachusetts, Somerville and Cambridge (home to Harvard University) both allowed for similar relationships, and major Democratic cities such as Oakland and Portland passed anti-discrimination measures that include “relationship structure.” In major Democratic cities, you and your not-significant-enough-to-be-in-a-stable-relationship-with significant others can enjoy more and more benefits, and it appears that each city is now trying to outdo the next in how far those benefits go.
Does this solve any real issues facing Californians in West Hollywood? Of course not. But it does give romantically confused people more of an excuse to lock themselves into multi-person relationships that run counter to human nature and tend to turn out badly. Such is the consequence of constantly “affirming” every decision people make in the name of letting love win, reinforcing a sexual revolution that has managed to make an increasing number of people more cynical about love and relationships.
