Piker sues Scott Jennings for $72.5 million in defamation case

Political streamer Hasan Piker is suing conservative commentator Scott Jennings for $72.5 million, alleging Jennings used a manipulated video and fabricated quotation to falsely accuse him of advocating the lynching of black Americans.

Piker filed the defamation lawsuit Tuesday in federal court in Washington, D.C., seeking at least $27.5 million in compensatory damages and $45 million in punitive damages.

The lawsuit centers on comments Jennings made during an Aug. 11 episode of “The Scott Jennings Show,” his radio program and podcast. Jennings, a CNN political commentator and frequent defender of President Donald Trump, played an edited compilation of Piker’s livestreams and accused him of calling for Black voters to be lynched, according to the complaint.

Piker, a left-wing political commentator and popular Twitch livestreamer, alleged Jennings misrepresented sarcastic remarks he made nearly two years earlier while reacting to a debate between two Black political commentators.

The complaint alleged Jennings presented the edited footage as authentic and added an on-screen caption falsely attributing a statement to Piker: “Let’s go back to a better time when lynchings were happening.”

Piker maintained he never made that statement as an expression of his own beliefs and has never advocated lynching.

“Mr. Jennings did not merely mischaracterize something Mr. Piker said,” the lawsuit states. “He took a false, fabricated, and manipulated video of Mr. Piker, added a made-up quotation that Mr. Piker never uttered.”

The dispute stems from an Oct. 29, 2024, Twitch broadcast in which Piker was watching a debate between a liberal and a conservative black political commentator. When the conservative commentator blamed “woke DAs” for policies he said were harming black Americans, Piker sarcastically mocked the argument as nostalgia for the period before the civil rights movement.

“We need more Klansmen, okay? Can we go back to a better time when lynchings were happening? This is what I like as a Black man. Also, there’s no real racism in America,” Piker said, according to the complaint, while framing the remarks as a sarcastic imitation of the commentator’s position.

Piker then questioned the argument, saying, “My man said, ‘woke DAs,’ dude. What are you saying?”

The lawsuit alleged that a 42-second video circulated online in August 2026 combined portions of three separate Twitch broadcasts. The footage was cropped and rearranged, removing the underlying debate and Piker’s opening words, “He said,” which indicated he was mocking someone else’s position.

The edited version also omitted his laughter and subsequent explanation, the complaint says, making his remarks appear to be a sincere endorsement of lynching rather than sarcasm.

Jennings aired the footage on his show on Aug. 11 and went beyond the video itself, accusing Piker of “calling for black voters to be lynched” and referring to a supposed “Piker plan of returning our country to lynchings,” according to the lawsuit. Jennings also posted on social media that Piker believed the United States should resume lynchings against black people.

Piker alleged that the statements were false assertions of fact, rather than protected political criticism, and that they damaged his reputation and his ability to earn money through streaming, sponsorships, and other professional opportunities.

The complaint also alleges Jennings had financial and professional incentives to make provocative accusations that would attract listeners and social media engagement. It further points to Jennings’s support for Trump as a potential motive for attacking a prominent left-wing commentator.

Piker’s attorneys sent Jennings a written demand for a retraction on Aug. 31, according to the complaint. Although Jennings’s attorneys acknowledged the demand, the lawsuit alleged, no substantive response or correction followed.
