Elissa Slotkin’s contemporary Bolshevism

.

Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) gave a preview of the harsh totalitarianism looming over the country should Democrats win control of Congress in the midterm elections. It involved harassment, intimidation, and nearly everything short of death directed at political opponents, specifically those considering seeking work in the Trump administration. She openly admitted that she wanted applicants to fear the consequences of doing so, characterizing her threats as a deterrent.

Slotkin made the remarks during a live forum on Oct. 13 hosted by the Institute of Politics at the University of Chicago. The senator suggested that any young person seeking employment with the Trump administration could find themselves facing a dystopian exercise in guilt by association in what seem to be the inevitable show trials orchestrated by Democrats should they return to power after the election.

“I want young people coming out of school to say, ‘Should I go work for the Trump administration?” Slotkin said at the event. “Like, that sounds fun. I might get an opportunity.’ I want them to be like, ‘Lord, that might be buying myself a ton of problems that I don’t want, and so let me avoid participating in that.’ I want that deterrence message sent.”

She calls it a message of deterrence. In reality, it’s a warning of left-wing destruction. Slotkin’s comments were an act of intimidation and a threat, the kind regularly issued by bullies.

Slotkin’s words represented the kind of abuse of power and restrictions on liberties that the Founding Fathers warned about when they created this republic. Moreover, Slotkin’s words were particularly rich given her history of criticizing the president for allegedly abusing his political power. She was supposed to be a political beacon of morality, yet her words and threatening actions reveal that she is just as bad as the very people she claimed to abhor the most.

Slotkin’s comments more closely resembled the warnings issued by the Bolsheviks during the Russian Revolution in 1917 than those of a sitting U.S. senator in 2026. While she hasn’t called for political violence, sending dissenters to gulags, or executing political rivals, her calls for political intimidation are eerily similar to many of the nonviolent actions taken by the Bolsheviks in the Soviet Union. Her threats of legal ramifications and warnings that applicants for administration jobs could encounter “a ton of problems” in the future are reminiscent of the denunciation strategies, high-pressure psychological tactics, and propaganda campaigns the Bolsheviks used to eliminate dissent and opposition in the 1920s.

But should anyone be surprised by Slotkin’s flippant attitude and hints of intimidation? After all, she is a member of the political party that, during former President Joe Biden’s term in office, sought to silence President Donald Trump on social media platforms, ban social media accounts that challenged administration messaging on the efficacy of COVID-19 remedies, and work behind the scenes to suppress the voice of Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY). There was also the time when the Biden administration flirted with appointing Nina Jankowicz as a disinformation czar before retreating from that initiative.

All of these horrors and abuses of power are likely to return should Democrats win the 2026 midterm elections.

Maya Angelou famously said, “When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.” Slotkin has been showing Americans who she is since she was first elected to Congress in 2018. Democrats have been doing the same for over a decade, since Trump arrived on the political scene. No one should be surprised by their thirst for contemporary Bolshevism, and everyone should remember it as they cast their votes on Nov. 3.
