Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced plans for a high-stakes meeting with President Donald Trump in New York.
As the Ukraine-Russia war continues for more than four years, the U.S. has provided support valued at billions. Zelensky and Trump have had a strained relationship as the U.S. president balances relations with Ukraine and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Trump recently also blamed Zelensky for the spike in diesel prices, urging the country to stop targeting Russian oil refineries. The demand comes as the U.S. sees rising energy prices across the country amid conflicts in Iran and prolonged fighting efforts in the Ukraine-Russia war.
Zelensky’s post on X suggests the U.S. and Ukraine are renewing efforts to end the war.
Zelensky said this meeting “could change a lot,” citing potential “diplomatic momentum.” While the exact agenda between the two world leaders wasn’t explicitly stated, Zelensky hinted at several topics.
“There are ideas for de-escalation steps and for addressing fundamental security issues – energy security, food security, and the protection of human life,” Zelensky wrote. “We are working together with the American team and are ready to take really serious steps.”
The Ukrainian president said he thanked Trump for signing the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act 2026, which targets Russia’s energy sector, named after the late Sen. Lindsey Graham.
