Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-MI) will headline a Washington, D.C., fundraiser for Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul el Sayed as Democrats rally around their nominee ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.
The fundraiser is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 29, and is being hosted by the Abdul for Victory Fund, a joint fundraising committee for el Sayed’s campaign and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, according to Politico.
The Washington Examiner reached out to the el Sayed campaign and Slotkin for comments.
Slotkin, who did not endorse either el Sayed or Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) during the Democratic primary, has since publicly backed el Sayed’s general election campaign.
“Dr. Abdul El-Sayed and I don’t agree on everything — and that’s okay. We can have real debates on those issues, like adults,” Slotkin said earlier this month. “But what’s way more important right now is what we do agree on: putting a real check on President Trump, and protecting Michigan’s middle class.”
El Sayed narrowly defeated Stevens, a centrist Democrat, in the August primary after a closely watched contest that exposed divisions within the party, including over U.S. policy toward Israel. Stevens had the backing of several establishment Democrats in Senate leadership, while el Sayed won support from prominent progressives, including Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
Slotkin remained neutral during the primary but has since joined other Democrats in backing el Sayed, as party leaders seek to consolidate support behind him ahead of his November matchup with Republican nominee Mike Rogers, a former congressman.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) emphasized the party’s “big tent” following el Sayed’s primary victory, despite Democratic leaders having largely favored Stevens during the primary. El Sayed has since met with Democratic senators in Washington and campaigned with Democrats from across the party’s ideological spectrum.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris is also set to campaign with el Sayed in Michigan on Tuesday, Sept. 22, marking their first public appearance together since Harris endorsed him after his primary victory. The two will participate in a roundtable focused on black maternal health.
El Sayed said Friday that he and Harris have discussed the fallout from the Biden administration’s Gaza policy as they prepare to campaign together.
El Sayed, a physician and former Detroit and Wayne County health director, faces Rogers in the November general election for the seat of retiring Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI). Michigan is among the closely watched Senate contests that could help determine control of the chamber.
