President Donald Trump announced Friday that he was banning CNN, MS Now, and Politico from the White House.
Trump announced the move via a post on Truth Social, accusing the outlets of reporting “FICTION and LIES.”
“I am proud to announce that, effective immediately, I am banning Fake News CNN, MSNOW (who recently changed their name from MSNBC due to lack of viewership and credibility!), and Politico (The recipients of an illegal and ridiculous $8 Million Dollar subscription, an All Time Record, directly from the United States Government, under Crooked Joe Biden, in order to keep them ‘alive,’” the president wrote. “Seems like corruption to me!), from the White House as a result of their constant “reporting” FAKE NEWS! Media Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America. Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP”
This is far from the first time the Trump administration has sought to limit the access of credentialed news outlets.
In 2018, during the president’s first term, Trump sought to strip press credentials from CNN’s Jim Acosta and other reporters from accessing the White House grounds after a particularly terse line of questioning from Acosta. A U.S. District Judge later reversed the ban, and the administration elected not to appeal the decision.
Last year, Trump also sought to bar Associated Press reporters from taking part in so-called pooling opportunities after the outlet refused to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America in the wake of the president’s executive order seeking to change the name of the international body of water. The Associated Press and press freedom groups sued the administration and received a semi-favorable ruling, though a loop hole allowed the White House to limit access for all of the so-called news wires, which include the Associated Press, Bloomberg, Reuters, and AFP.
Furthermore, the White House in October of 2025 stopped allowing reporters into the “upper press” offices, where the press secretary and senior communications team work, without requesting appointments. Previously, fully accredited reporters were granted freedom of movement between the upper and lower press offices, the suite located directly behind the Brady Briefing Room.
