Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers entered the U.S. political fray this week, blasting President Donald Trump in a podcast interview.
Rodgers trashed the president and the Make America Great Again movement, predicated on his belief that Trump has failed to deliver “any of his campaign promises.” The future National Football League Hall of Famer made the comments in the second installment of a two-part episode on the “Not Just Football” podcast, hosted by Cameron Heyward, Rodgers’ teammate on the Steelers.
“There is no MAGA movement,” Rodgers said. “There is no Make America Great Again movement. Because the guy you elected hasn’t done any of his campaign promises.”
Rodgers didn’t go into any detail on what campaign promises he believed Trump failed to deliver on. He just cited his second term as another example in U.S. politics in which people voted for a candidate to deliver change, but that change, disappointingly, never materialized.
“And it just realizes, you think something’s going to actually change,” lamented Rodgers.
Rodgers offered sarcastic synopses of Trump’s two terms during the interview. When speaking of his first term, Rodgers said the thought was that “Trump’s going to come in and drain the swamp and do something. And then nothing happens, and nothing changes.”
He then briefly described his perception of Trump’s second term, after commenting about President Joe Biden’s term.
“Then they roll out that old bag of bones,” Rodgers said. “That was a wild four years. And then you just bring back in, you know, the guy from the TV show. Who’s gonna, ‘Ok, now…it’s his second administration, now he’s really going to change things.”
Trump and Biden weren’t the only presidents whom Rodgers criticized. The Steelers quarterback also blasted former President Barack Obama.
“When Obama was president … everybody was like, oh, there’s going to be hope and change for a better world,” Rodgers said. “But did anything in the Black community get significantly better?”
“No,” replied Heyward.
“Is anybody better off?” Rodgers added. “Did the Affordable Care Act make a major difference besides being an extra tax? Is healthcare that much better in this country?”
“Politics is a total sham,” Rodgers would go on to say. “Politics is a crazy psyop. If voting actually mattered, they wouldn’t let you do it. That’s the truth of it.”
ESPN host, sports journalist, and rumored presidential candidate in 2028, Stephen A. Smith, agreed with Rodgers’ criticisms of Trump. The sports commentator reposted the video of Rodgers’ interview and emphasized that he agreed with him.
“I hear you @AaronRodgers12, I hear you loud and clear. And so should everyone else!” Smith said in a post on X on Thursday.
