Texas Democrat Gina Hinojosa backs Trump’s $5,000 dividend but rejects conditional payout

Texas Democratic gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa announced she supports President Donald Trump’s idea for a $5,000 dividend to U.S. adults but only if it is decoupled from the 2026 midterm outcome, as he conditioned.

“Right now, Americans are paying into a system that’s spending, at least, billions on grift, and it’s time for that money to go back into people’s pockets,” Hinojosa said in a statement. “I support Trump’s idea to send $5,000 checks to Texans, but it can’t be about who’s in power – it has to be about giving the people their power back.”

Hinojosa is challenging three-term Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) to lead the Lone Star State this year. As part of her campaign platform, Hinojosa rolled out a dividend promise of her own, pledging to give Texans $1,500 in a “Corruption Tax Refund” on Day 1 if she is elected governor.

As part of his GOP midterm convention speech in Texas, Trump promised American adults a check of $5,000 if Republicans maintain control of the House and Senate after the midterm elections. He also said the money would have to be spent in the United States.

“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them, because of our economic, tremendous economic success — in history we’ve never had anything like what’s happening — but because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump said Thursday.

Trump clarified on Thursday that he could not move to hand out the checks now because Democrats would waste the money, he said in a Fox News interview on The Ingraham Angle.

“The Democrats can’t do it because with them it’s negative growth,” Trump said.

Abbott is set to speak at the convention on Thursday evening between 6 and 7 p.m. The Washington Examiner has reached out to Abbott’s campaign for comment on Hinojosa’s statement and Trump’s dividend check idea.

TRUMP’S PROMISED $5,000 ‘DIVIDEND’ CHECKS: WHAT TO KNOW

Hinojosa, who is running on an affordability-focused economic platform she calls “money in your pocket,” says her promised dividend check would come from Texas’s Economic Stabilization Fund, which is taxpayer-supported.

Pundits lean the race between Abbott and Hinojosa in the incumbent’s favor, with the Cook Political Report calling the race “likely Republican.” Most polling has favored Abbott by single digits.
