Washington Examiner columnist Joe Concha said the first-ever midterm convention will “own the news cycle,” giving Republicans a chance to highlight their accomplishments.
The Republican Party “has to own the affordability argument, that’s what this entire election is about, because what we’re seeing in every interview and every social media post that Democrats are making and doing, is they claim how to make things more affordable,” Concha said on Fox News’s Fox & Friends First Tuesday. “They have the answers, they have the plan.”
According to a July Pew Research study, many Americans view the current state of the economy negatively, and the economy and affordability remain key issues for voters ahead of the midterm elections.
The first-ever Republican Party midterm convention is being held Sept. 9 and 10 in Dallas, Texas, and could provide Republicans a chance to change the narrative. The event will focus on Trump and the GOP’s agenda. Trump and Vice President JD Vance are both expected to speak at the convention.
According to a Financial Times/Focaldata survey from August, 53% of 2,152 respondents, including 24% who voted for President Donald Trump in 2024, believe their economic condition has worsened.
In the survey, 63% of respondents said they believe the economy is going in the wrong direction, including 37% of 2024 Trump voters.
The poll shows the shift voters have had about the Trump economy, making it a top priority for the GOP.
Concha said Republican candidates need to remind people that inflation crested at nearly 9% in June 2022 under then-President Joe Biden.
“Republicans have to remind voters about where we are as an economy right now,” Concha said.

Concha highlighted the Trump administration’s policies with no tax on tips and no tax on Social Security.
“They are saying, ‘Here it is, post-Labor Day, game on.’”
