President Donald Trump reiterated his commitment to the war in Iran on Wednesday, saying the coming midterm elections won’t alter his attempts to strangle the regime in Tehran economically.
Trump ordered fresh strikes against the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Tuesday, following a weekend of skirmishing. The strikes mark the first significant military action since late July, when Trump signaled his plans to shift toward an economic warfare strategy.
The renewed fighting has caused oil prices to increase, but Trump said the rise was temporary and prices would come crashing down once the Iranian regime collapsed.
“The good news is the stock market hits new records every day, so the stock market wasn’t affected. Although it would even be higher, believe it or not, the stock market will go up, but it’s very simple,” he told reporters. “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. As soon as it’s over, which I don’t think will be very much longer, I don’t know how much more they can take. But whatever it is, it doesn’t matter.”
“I’m not affected by the election. No. 1, I’m not running, but my party’s running, and I’m going to help my party. But I think my party respects the fact that we’re not allowing Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” Trump concluded. “Frankly, other presidents should have done that, but they didn’t have whatever it takes to do it.”
