Retired Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, who lost Tuesday’s Democratic Senate primary in Florida, pledged to donate money remaining from his campaign to help elect Sunshine State Democrats.
Vindman, a former director of European affairs for the National Security Council, lost in an upset to socialist state Rep. Angie Nixon, who won the primary by more than 12 percentage points.
In a statement on Friday, Vindman said his campaign had already contributed $400,000 to the Florida Democratic Party and would make additional donations in the coming weeks.
“Your support is going where you intended: to help elect Democrats everywhere and to put a check on Donald Trump’s power,” Vindman said, adding that his campaign received nearly 500,000 individual donations.
Vindman entered the primary as the heavy fundraising favorite, bringing in more than $16 million compared with Nixon’s less than $1 million. His national profile, bolstered by his role in the first Trump impeachment, also helped make him the race’s early front-runner. But Nixon ultimately pulled off the upset, defeating Vindman despite his overwhelming fundraising advantage.
The Florida Senate race is not expected to be competitive in November, with Republicans maintaining a strong grip on the state. Recent polling has shown Republican Sen. Ashley Moody (R-FL), the former Florida attorney general appointed to the Senate after Marco Rubio became secretary of state, with a substantial lead over Nixon.
Vindman became a prominent figure during Trump’s first impeachment trial in 2019 after he blew the whistle on the president’s 2019 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which became central to the House’s impeachment proceedings on allegations of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. Trump was later acquitted by the Senate.
Trump took aim at Vindman after the primary, mocking his loss to Nixon and accusing him of treason due to his role in the impeachment trial.
“The most gratifying loss last night was that of a real treasonous creep, Alexander Vindman, to a Radical Left Lunatic, who can’t speak or think properly, and who will go down to certain defeat at the hands of Ashley Moody, a truly Fantastic Senator, from the Great State Florida,” Trump posted earlier this week.
