Vice President JD Vance and former George W. Bush speechwriter Marc Thiessen exchanged pointed barbs over concerns about the price of food on college campuses.
Thiessen, who was also a speechwriter for the late Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and has criticized Vance for his leadership in the Trump administration’s peace talks with Iran, dismissed a post on X by Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet about a TPUSA student who complained about burritos costing $20.
“Cry me a river,” Thiessen wrote on Wednesday. “The burritos in the college cafeteria are included in your meal plan.”
Hours later, Vance, who has developed a reputation for picking or participating in social media wars of words that critics contend are below the office of the vice president, responded, alluding to Thiessen’s weight.
“I’m surprised to hear Mark say this,” he wrote. “If you’ve ever met him in person, it’s quite obvious the man has never missed a burrito.”
Thiessen, who frequently makes appearances on Fox News and provides President Donald Trump with foreign policy advice, criticized Vance in a Washington Post op-ed last week.
“The ceasefire and memorandum of understanding negotiated by Vice President JD Vance — which have driven Trump into a strategic cul-de-sac of negotiations, Iranian violations and U.S. retaliatory strikes, followed by more negotiations,” Thiessen wrote. “Indeed, by elevating a deal as the definition of victory, Vance has given Iran a veto over America’s ability to declare victory. All it has to do is refuse to agree — which it is doing.”

Vance’s response to Thiessen on Wednesday similarly received criticism from Democrats, including former Barack Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau.
“Welcome back to s***posting, sir!” Favreau wrote. “Don’t listen to [White House chief of staff] Susie Wiles – keep Twitter on your phone!”
