Washington Examiner chief political columnist Byron York said “we’ve learned a lot about the DSA” recently and have identified the “sweet spot” for the party.
On Tuesday, Rep. Greg Stanton (D-AZ) triumphed over his Democratic Socialists of America-backed opponent Kai Newkirk for Arizona’s 4th Congressional District.
“It would have been a huge story if the DSA had knocked off another Democratic incumbent. But they didn’t do that,” York said on Fox News’s Fox & Friends Wednesday.
York said socialist wins in New York City, Colorado, and Washington, D.C., are proving what the party’s “sweet spot” is.
York cited the article, “The DSA Sweet Spot: Highly Educated, Downwardly Mobile,” from Nate Silver of the Silver Bulletin, published Tuesday.
“They showed the sweet spot for the democratic socialist is a highly educated person with a graduate degree who is not making very much money,” York said.

“So, highly educated, lower income, that is a real sweet spot for the DSA. And the idea is perhaps they are bitter about the way things have gone in their life, perhaps they’re ideological and have chosen some field of work that will not be very rewarding, but might have bigger social impacts.”
York said that that demographic is, in some ways, a distinct and smaller constituency than the Democratic Party as a whole.
