A Democratic Socialists of America caucus argued the Constitution was created to protect slavery and wealthy people in a Monday video calling for a new founding document.
The DSA’s Marxist Unity Group, a caucus focused on mass movement-building, called on viewers to join the DSA and fight for a “big public assembly” to establish “a democratic socialist republic” under another constitution. The bold message comes after the organization received significant attention for its new “program” outlining radical policy priorities and saw three endorsed candidates win Democratic primaries in June.
“Have you ever felt like we just don’t have a say in how things run? Well, you’re not wrong,” a spokesperson says in the video. “The Constitution wasn’t written for everybody. It was made by rich landowners who owned slaves, and it was designed to protect their power, not give ordinary people a real vote. Back then, the founding fathers were kind of like the billionaires of today: Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, Peter Thiel, the rest of them — they had a lot of power, land, and control.”
“The founders that wrote the Constitution — they made it so that it helped them stay on top,” she continues. “They were terrified that if everybody had equal rights, black people, indigenous populations, and communities would demand fairness and reparations, and also that poor workers, white workers, would actually have a say in how things would go. So they built a system that kept them on top. Today, we see the results of that.”
Less than half of the Constitution’s original signers in 1787 owned enslaved people, according to historical accounts, which differ on the precise number. Rather than uniting America’s founders, slavery divided the authors of both the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence as a moral issue.
Nonetheless, the Constitution’s supposedly corrupt origins are linked to modern-day police “killing black people,” prisons “tearing our families apart,” rigged voting maps, poverty, presidential overreach, and “a Senate that gives extra weight to mostly white, less populated states,” the DSA speaker argues in the socialists’ recruiting video.
The DSA’s national program advocates abolishing the Senate and the Electoral College, letting criminals and noncitizens vote, and restricting the Supreme Court’s authority. The organization’s website says its candidates are running in 60 upcoming elections across the U.S. and have already won 38 this year. The DSA also announced on July 6 that it had reached an all-time high membership at more than 120,000 members, making it the largest socialist organization in American history.

“That’s why the Democratic Socialists of America say we need a new Constitution, one that’s written for the people, by the people, not billionaires or their great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandparents,” the speaker in the Monday video says. “We want a system where working-class people actually hold power, where our rights are protected, where we can make real progress without the old roadblocks. Here’s the thing: both Republicans and Democrats seem to love the old Constitution the way it is, but we think that we need a new mass political party, one that will constantly teach, talk, and organize around this idea.
“DSA’s new program says it clearly: we are workers fighting to transform society, to win the battle for democracy, draft a new constitution, and create a democratic socialist republic,” she argues. “So, if you’re tired of a system that feels like it wasn’t built for you, you’re right, it wasn’t. But you can join us.”
