President Donald Trump poured cold water on theories that the late Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was assassinated by Russia, Iran, or any other American enemies.
Trump made the comments during a Tuesday bilateral meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al Zaidi in the Oval Office.
FBI Director Kash Patel said over the weekend that the bureau was assisting local authorities in investigating Graham’s death, and agents were photographed at Graham’s Washington home on Monday. However, the president, when asked directly by reporters on Tuesday, said he did not “know why” agents were carrying out the inquiry.
“There’s not much, so I don’t see a lot of evil there,” Trump claimed. “I know there’s all sorts of conspiracy theories going along, and I think the FBI is wasting their time if they’re doing it.”
Trump had a close relationship with Graham, and he additionally told reporters that he was aware of the senator’s history with heart disease.
“His father had a very similar problem, as you know. It’s very unique,” the president added, noting that he frequently urged Graham to take “better care of himself and that, since Sunday, he had asked White House physicians to specifically explain the cause of Graham’s death.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT DARLINE GRAHAM NORDONE, SOUTH CAROLINA’S NEWEST SENATOR
“This is something that is very, almost, undetectable, and if it happens, there’s not much you can do about it,” Trump said. “Sounds unfortunate, but there’s not much you can do about it. If you look at his father died of the same thing at about the same age, so there was not much. They say it’s almost undetectable.”
