Brooklyn Bridge catches fire during July Fourth fireworks show in New York

.

A sizable fire broke out on the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City during its July Fourth fireworks show.

Cities and localities across the country went all out in their fireworks displays to commemorate the 250th birthday of the United States. New York City was no exception, but the scale of the show resulted in a fire breaking out on the iconic bridge, sending fire crews scrambling to put it out.

No injuries were reported, as crowds were prevented from occupying the bridge during the show.

The New York City Fire Department said two engines were used to extinguish the fire. It stressed that fires of that kind aren’t a major surprise during fireworks shows, and it’s why crowds are kept at a distance.

The fire occurred sometime shortly before 10 p.m.

The exact cause of the fire is ambiguous; statements from the fire and police departments indicated it was “very likely” or “likely” caused by the fireworks themselves.

The fireworks display had been pushed ahead in time over fears of severe weather.
