Democratic Texas Land Commissioner candidate Ben Flores delivered a unique defense of Texas state Rep. James Talarico (D-TX), saying, “We’re all gay, tofu-eating vegans.”
“Next time they say that James is trans, we’re all trans. When they say James is a tofu-eating vegan, we’re all tofu-eating vegans. And when they say James is going to hell, we’ll say, we’re all going to hell,” Flores said during the Texas Democratic Convention in Corpus Christi, Friday.
Flores’ remarks follow in reference to the barrage of attacks Talarico has faced from Republicans since launching his U.S. Senate campaign. Talarico has built his campaign around key issues, including healthcare, corruption and democracy, immigration and border security, and foreign policy.
In recent months, critics have unearthed Talarico’s past comments, questioned his gender identity, and attacked his religious views as he campaigns in one of the nation’s most closely watched Senate races.
PAXTON WON’T SAY WHETHER JAMES TALARICO IS GOING TO HELL
Flores’ remarks added another flashpoint to the increasingly heated race, underscoring how Talarico’s campaign has become a focal point in the broader culture war playing out in Texas politics
Talarico is running against Texas Attorney General and Republican Senate nominee Ken Paxton. Voters are split evenly so far, according to a recent poll from RealClearPolling.
