Texas GOP convention’s live elephant steals the show — for all the wrong reasons

.

A live elephant was the center of attention at the 2026 Republican Party of Texas Convention, serving as a symbol of unity — and later giving attendees something else to remember.

The convention ran from June 11-13 in Houston, Texas, with a theme of “Strong Roots, Bold Future.”

As part of the event, an African elephant named Paige surprised attendees on Friday.

Paige was wearing a banner that said, “UNITY DRIVES VICTORY” alongside the campaign logo for Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX). Abbott reposted a video with the elephant, and said, “Everything IS bigger in Texas!”

While the Texas GOP highlighted the spectacular emblem, symbolizing the Republican Party’s iconic elephant logo, Democrats shared a different message.

Paige relieved herself as she was walking through the crowd, urinating on the floor.

The Texas Democratic Party posted a video of the incident, which was circulating on social media, calling it a “perfect metaphor for the Texas Republican Party.”

The elephant’s appearance also drew criticism over animal cruelty, something conservative commentator Link Lauren was vocal about on X.

“Good for the elephant. It’s probably overwhelmed and anxious. Leave animals out of this stuff. I love my people in the Texas GOP. My home state. But this is a bad look. Not necessary,” Lauren said.

Some Republicans attending the event appeared unfazed by the incident, with several treating it as one of the convention’s more memorable moments.

Political commentator and podcaster Benny Johnson said, “Immaculate vibes” in response to the video.

Julie Pickren, a member of the Texas State Board of Education, said Paige knew what she was doing when she decided to make her mark.

“The TX Republican Elephant doesn’t like Fake News either. Stopped and pissed right in front of media booth,” Pickren said.
