Russia launches massive drone and missile attack against Ukraine, killing at least 13 and wounding over 100

At least 13 people were killed, and over 100 were injured after Russia launched a massive attack on Ukraine on Tuesday, including a child. Russia deployed 656 drones and 73 drones, hitting Ukrainian cities Dnipro, Kharkiv, and Kyiv. Ukrainian officials claimed that Russia purposely targeted “civilian infrastructure” in its latest attack.

“Apartment buildings were destroyed in Dnipro. 9 people died, including a child. Among the victims of the shelling was our rescuer, the deputy chief of the fire and rescue squad, Major Anton Yarmolenko,” said Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.

He noted the attack on Ukraine’s capital city, Kyiv, mentioning that a three-year-old child was among the victims.

“Unfortunately, four people died as a result of the Russian shelling of Kyiv,” said Klymenko. “More than 60 residents were injured and sought medical help. Among those who received shrapnel wounds is a three-year-old child.”

Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrii Sybiha said the fact that Russia attacked civilians was a sign that it was losing “on the battlefield.” He also blasted Russian President Vladimir Putin as a war criminal.

“The only reason for Russia’s overnight horrific attack against Ukraine with 656 drones and 73 missiles that killed at least 12, including children, and injured hundreds of civilians is that Putin is a war criminal and loser who has no cards except terror,” said Sybiha in a post on X.

“Moscow is losing on the battlefield,” he added. “No number of missiles can change this.”

Sybiha requested further help from Ukraine’s allies, providing a list of “concrete steps that can be taken,” including additional sanctions, freezing Russian assets, and providing more aid to Ukraine, including the purchase of anti-missile defense systems and “Patriot” systems.

“Use the unblocked European Peace Fund to fund the PURL program and buy additional ‘Patriot’ systems and missiles for Ukraine,” Sybiha said. “Advance the anti-ballistic coalition. Increase investment in Ukraine’s long-range capabilities.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky lamented Russia’s latest attack and cited it as proof his country needs more missile-defense systems in order to survive. He listed the number of casualties in the attacks and criticized Russia for targeting civilian and energy infrastructures.

“More than 500 personnel of the State Emergency Service have been involved in dealing with the aftermath of Russia’s overnight attack on our cities and communities,” Zelensky said. The main strike was on Kyiv, where dozens of residential buildings and other purely civilian infrastructure were damaged again.

He also called for Europe to have its own “anti-ballistic defense” to prevent such devastating attacks. He also pleaded for the United States to give further assistance, requesting “Patriot” systems.

“In total, overnight Russia launched 656 attack drones and 73 missiles of various types at our people – ballistic, cruise, and anti-ship missiles,” Zelensky said in a post on X. “A large-scale attack and an absolutely clear statement from Russia: if Ukraine is not protected from ballistic and other missile strikes, these attacks will continue. Europe needs its own anti-ballistic defense so that this war can finally be brought to an end. And assistance from the United States in supplying missiles for Patriot systems is absolutely necessary.”
