President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he will likely attend the New York Knicks’ NBA Finals game next week.
Trump, a New York native, said he was invited by James Dolan, who owns the Knicks, the New York Rangers, and Madison Square Garden to attend the game.
“They really, they have some great players,” Trump said to reporters during a White House Cabinet meeting. “I think I’ll be going to one of the games. Yeah, I was invited by numerous people and [Dolan], and I think I’ll be going.”
This year marks the first time in 27 years that the Knicks have advanced to the NBA Finals. The New York-based team will face the Western Conference finals winner, where the Oklahoma City Thunder lead the San Antonio Spurs 3-2 in a best-of-seven series.
“Boy, what a team,” Trump said of the Knicks. “They win all their games,” adding that “the Knicks have really, they’ve really suffered for years.
The Knicks’ last NBA Finals appearance was in 1999, when the team lost to San Antonio. Their last championship was in 1973 against the Los Angeles Lakers.
WHAT TO KNOW ABOUT THE FREEDOM 250 UFC FIGHT ON THE WHITE HOUSE LAWN
Trump has made appearances at multiple high-profile sports events throughout his second term. Last year, he attended the Super Bowl, the Club World Cup final, the U.S. Open, the Daytona 500, and the Ryder Cup. In the coming weeks, Trump’s White House will host a UFC fight on the front lawn.
If Trump attends the final next week, it will mark the first time a sitting president has attended an NBA Finals game.
