Two dead after driver runs over crowds in Leipzig, Germany

Authorities said at least two people are dead and 25 people are injured after a car drove through a crowd in Leipzig, Germany.

At least two others sustained serious injuries, according to German news agency Radio Leipzig.

The perpetrator was reportedly a German man in his mid-30s, and he appeared mentally disturbed at his arrest. The driver was apprehended and is no longer considered a threat, authorities said.

According to law enforcement authorities, the event was declared a “mass casualty incident.” 

“Emergency services have declared a mass casualty incident, and a large number of police officers are on the scene,” Polizei Sachse, the Saxon State Police, said in a statement translated from German.

Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung confirmed that the incident was contained and expressed “shock” at the event. 

“It’s shocking. All I can do right now is express my solidarity with the victims’ families,” Jung told reporters at the scene, according to German news outlet DW. “Everything else will have to be determined by the work of the police and investigative authorities.”

The incident happened at around 5 p.m. Central European Summer Time in Grimmaische Strasse, a street that leads to the city’s shopping district.

Leipzig is home to more than 630,000 citizens, making it one of the largest cities in eastern Germany.
