Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) said MAGA is failing, and fighting “fire with fire,” so Democrats will win in the midterm elections after a redistricting vote gave Democrats an overwhelming advantage in Virginia
“MAGA, dare I say, they’re losing at their own game. They’re on the defense, and they’re scared,” Newsom said on TikTok Tuesday.
Virginia voters hit the polls on Tuesday for a ballot initiative to redraw the state’s congressional map.
Virginia Democrats hold a 6-5 advantage over the state’s Republicans in the House, but the newly passed map would add as many as four more Democratic seats, possibly giving the party a 10-1 advantage.
The redistricting battle began last summer after Texas, driven by President Donald Trump, decided to redraw its congressional map aimed at gaining Republicans as many as five additional House seats. The initiative sparked similar efforts in both Democratic- and Republican-led states.
The Supreme Court approved Texas’s new congressional map in December 2025.
California also passed a similar measure, which the Supreme Court also approved. While Republicans condemned Democrats’ efforts in Virginia, Democrats have argued that it’s a countermeasure to Republican redistricting in other states.
The ballot asked if Virginia should allow a temporary adoption of “New congressional districts to restore fairness in the upcoming elections, while ensuring Virginia’s standard redistricting process resumes for all future redistricting after the 2030 census?”

“What is at stake is putting a stake in the heart of the Trump administration by taking back the House of Representatives and taking back the United States Senate,” Newsom said.
“We are winning all across the United States.”
