Two suspects arrested for allegedly targeting OpenAI CEO’s home after last attack

Police arrested two suspects who allegedly targeted OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s $27 million mansion in San Francisco on Sunday.

The arrests came two days after a prior attack in which a man allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s home. That suspect was also arrested.

In the most recent incident, the San Francisco Police Department determined that Amanda Tom, 25, and Muhamad Tarik Hussein, 23, were behind a possible shooting while driving near Altman’s residence early Sunday morning.

Police did not mention the OpenAI CEO or a possible motive in its press release, but reporting shows a Honda sedan stopped in front of his property before one of the suspects allegedly fired a gunshot. Security personnel heard the shot and reported it to officers, who used surveillance footage to track the car.

The investigation led authorities to a home, where Tom and Hussein were arrested without incident. The vehicle was determined to belong to Tom, and three firearms were seized at the scene.

“The SFPD takes crimes involving guns extremely seriously, and anyone committing acts like these will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” SFPD Chief Derrick Lew said. “I want to thank our officers whose swift actions identified these suspects, took them into custody, and got dangerous weapons off our streets.”

The two suspects were booked for negligent discharge at the San Francisco County Jail.

The alleged shooting resulted in no injuries.

On Friday, Daniel Alejandro Moreno-Gama, 20, was arrested on charges stemming from the Molotov cocktail attack that resulted in minor property damage at Altman’s home.

After fleeing the scene and before he was apprehended, the same man made a similar threat to OpenAI’s headquarters. No injuries were reported at either location, and the company said it is assisting police in the investigation.

Moreno-Gama was booked into the San Francisco County Jail on charges of attempted murder, arson, criminal threats, and possession of incendiary and destructive devices.

His motive appears to be related to his existential fear of artificial intelligence, a topic that he has written about extensively on Substack since January. His Instagram account also references the dangers of AI with a reference to the Dune franchise, calling himself a “Butlerian jihadist.” In the sci-fi series, the Butlerian Jihad is essentially a human-led crusade that eradicated “thinking machines.”
