Tiger Woods allegedly carried opioid pills in pocket during crash, police say

Golf legend Tiger Woods allegedly carried two hydrocodone pills in his left pocket as he crashed his vehicle in Florida late last week, according to an arrest affidavit.

Woods was suspected of driving under the influence, for which he was arrested Friday afternoon. He was released from jail later that day.

In the official document obtained by multiple news outlets, local police say Woods had “bloodshot and glassy” eyes and that his pupils were “extremely dilated” at the time of the crash. Police also say he exhibited “lethargic and slow” movements and that he was “sweating profusely.”

The golfer told officers he did not consume alcohol before the rollover crash around 2 p.m. Friday, but he did admit to taking prescription medication that morning.

Hydrocodone is a semi-synthetic opioid used to treat pain. President Donald Trump said the 50-year-old athlete “lives a life of pain,” pointing to Woods’s prior leg and back injuries. Woods is currently dating Vanessa Trump, the ex-wife of Donald Trump Jr.

“He has a lot of pain,” Trump told the New York Post on Tuesday. “He’s an amazing guy. He’s an amazing athlete. He does have pain.”

Woods passed a breathalyzer test, but he reportedly struggled to perform the standard field sobriety test in which a person suspected of driving under the influence is instructed to walk normally. He could not do so, telling an officer that he had surgical operations on his back and leg after a prior crash.

Woods did not submit to a urinalysis test, according to officials. He was charged with a DUI, property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful blood-alcohol test.

The Washington Examiner contacted the Martin County Sheriff’s Office for a copy of the arrest affidavit.

Woods collided with a truck pulling a trailer as the other driver turned into a driveway on Jupiter Island. While speeding, Woods was checking his phone and changing the radio station when the rollover crash occurred, he told police. Neither the golfer nor anyone else was injured in the crash.

This is the fourth time that Woods has been involved in a car crash. In February 2021, he was seriously injured in a crash that shattered his right leg and ankle. He was driving in California at the time and was not charged in that crash.
