Mullin’s swearing-in ceremony comes as the Department of Homeland Security shutdown moves into its sixth week. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers have begun helping the Transportation Security Administration with security screenings at airports around the country as airports combat hourslong security lines.

Republicans on Capitol Hill voiced optimism that a Senate deal to end the shutdown could be around the corner after a Monday evening meeting with Trump. Democrats have refused to budge on their calls for immigration reform before agreeing to a deal to fund the agency that houses ICE.
