Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) may not run for reelection for his Senate seat but could opt for higher office, according to one expert.

The centrist Democrat is expected to face a difficult reelection bid against a field of Republican candidates in a state that is a GOP stronghold.

On radio station WAJR’s show Talk of the Town, Fairmont State University professor Greg Noone cited strong GOP candidates, including Gov. Jim Justice (R-WV), as a reason Manchin should consider a White House run.

The West Virginia seat is one of the GOP’s top targets for the 2024 elections, with Justice and Rep. Alex Mooney (R-WV) already set to challenge Manchin for his seat.

“I’m very seriously considering running for Senate,” Justice said earlier this month. “A lot of thinking and planning and everything and discussion ongoing with my family and lots of folks, but serious, serious consideration. You’ll know real soon.”
