San Francisco teachers and their union shut down schools for a week over pay increases that are only necessary because they support Democrats who make the city too expensive.
The United Educators of San Francisco and the San Francisco Unified School District came to an agreement Friday morning to end a strike that lasted all week. The striking teachers declared that this was a “strike for our students” and that it was “for the betterment of our students.” According to teachers and their union, the real reason students were kept out of school all week, falling behind on lessons, was that it is very important for students that teachers get paid more.
TEACHERS UNION LEADERS SPENT THOUSANDS AT SWANKY RESORTS
You really have to admire the selflessness of these teachers shutting down schools so they can get paid more money. Truly inspiring.
The average San Francisco teacher already earns over $103,000 per year, a 30% increase in average salary over just the past five years, and that isn’t even factoring in benefits. That number is going to continue to increase through the new agreed-upon raises, even though the SFUSD has a budget deficit of around $100 million. The SFUSD is broke, teachers are making six figures and have seen 30% raises compared to five years ago, and they want even more.
The stated reason for that is that the cost of living in San Francisco is incredibly high, and that is indeed true. Whose fault is that? San Francisco has been run by Democrats for over 50 years now. As with the state of California, San Francisco is expensive because Democrats have a monopoly on power and Democratic policies dramatically increase the cost of living.
AMERICA’S HYPERPOLITICIZED TEACHERS UNIONS
Now, who does the UESF overwhelmingly donate to, and for whom do the teachers in the SFUSD vote? The same Democrats making the city so ludicrously expensive. The teachers and their union are demanding raises because a six-figure salary is not enough to live in the city they voted for, and their solution is not to have their money-guzzling union start supporting change in the city, but to maintain the political status quo and make students pay for those raises with delays to their education.
As is always the case with teachers unions, politics are the top priority, and what is good for students is the bottom priority. Teachers will be back in another year or two to demand more raises as San Francisco becomes even more expensive, and no one will have learned anything from this, including the children who are being deprived of school days by these oh-so-selfless demands for higher teacher salaries.
