President Donald Trump is holding a signing ceremony for legislation about milk in public schools, but the event is sure to be overshadowed by speculation around possible military strikes against Iran.
The ceremony is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
Iran has been engulfed in the bloodiest protests since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, triggered by worsening economic conditions. The government has responded with brutal repression, killing anywhere from hundreds to over 12,000 protesters.
TRUMP PLEDGES ‘VERY STRONG ACTION’ IF IRAN BEGINS HANGING PROTESTERS
Trump has faced increased pressure to mount a response in favor of the protesters, especially after he pledged to intervene to protect them if the government began killing protesters.
“We don’t want to see what’s happening in Iran happen. And, you know, if they want to have protests, that’s one thing. When they start killing thousands of people, and now you’re telling me about hanging, we’ll see how that works out for them. It’s not going to work out good,” he told CBS Evening News anchor Tony Dokoupil on Tuesday when asked about the possible hanging of protesters.
