GOP lawmakers blast Clinton’s ‘disappointing’ decision to miss deposition

.

House Republicans went on the record to call out former President Bill Clinton for opting to “hide behind Hillary’s skirt” in missing his deposition Tuesday.

The House Oversight Committee requested both the former president and his wife, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, for a deposition regarding their involvement with late convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein.

“Bill Clinton did not show up, and I think it’s important to know that this subpoena was voted on in a bipartisan manner by this committee,” Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) told reporters in the Capitol Tuesday. “No one‘s accusing Bill Clinton of any wrongdoing. We just have questions. That’s why the Democrats voted along with Republicans to subpoena Bill Clinton.”

In addition to the Clintons dodging their deposition, Comer noted that “not a single Democrat showed up” either.

Comer said he had a binder full of questions the committee planned to ask the former first couple regarding the 17 White House visits Epstein made during Clinton’s presidency.

Comer noted that, as a sitting congressman, he has only visited the White House nine times in the nine years he has been in Congress.

“He’s gutless,” Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) said of Clinton. “He’s gonna hide behind Hillary’s skirt or somebody else’s. It’s really a shame when you’ve had this level of perception for so long, and they’re allowed to do it. They thumb their nose at the system, the system that they swore to uphold.”

“Where’s Bill??” Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) wrote on X Tuesday. “CONTEMPT OF CONGRESS.”

The House will vote next week on whether to hold the Clintons in contempt. Rep. Greg Steube (R-FL) tweeted that he would vote in favor of it.

“The Clintons should be held in contempt by the House. We should then send a prosecutorial referral to DOJ and they should suffer the same fate as [Peter Navarro] and [Steve Bannon],” Steube wrote on X.

Both Navarro and Bannon served prison time for defying a subpoena from the now-defunct January 6 Committee.

Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ) released a video of himself walking the halls of the Capitol to react to the no-show. According to Biggs, the committee unanimously voted to subpoena the Clintons.

“[The Clintons] chose not to come after the months and months of trying to accommodate them and a bipartisan subpoena, so we hope that they respond to the contempt citation, which will be voted on next week,” Biggs said.

In a letter to Comer, the Clintons criticized the committee for dismissing previous subpoenas against seven other witnesses on the matter of Epstein.

“In fact, since you started your investigation last year, you have interviewed a total of two people. Two,” the letter read. “A legal analysis prepared by two law firms and provided to you yesterday makes clear your subpoenas are legally invalid.”

Sen. Tim Kaine (D-VA) recommended that Clinton “address” photos with Epstein during a television appearance last month. However, he has not yet publicly commented on the missed subpoena.

DOJ SAYS 2 MILLION MORE EPSTEIN FILES ARE BEING REVIEWED

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) was a leading member of the effort to release the Epstein files, but has also not commented publicly regarding the Clintons. Khanna was among the Democratic committee members who did not appear for the deposition on Tuesday.

The Washington Examiner has reached out to Kaine and Khanna for comment.
