Georgia state senator pitches himself as Trump ally in bid for MTG’s seat

Georgia state Sen. Colton Moore officially announced his bid for Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene’s (R-GA) House seat on Monday, pitching himself as a strong ally for President Donald Trump ahead of the 2026 elections.

Moore is the latest candidate to join the race for Greene’s seat, which includes former Federal Emergency Management Agency worker Star Black and teacher Jeff Criswell, among others. Greene announced in November that she would resign on Jan. 5, 2026, after she and Trump ended their alliance in various public statements.

Similar to Greene before shifting her stance on Trump, Moore is campaigning as a staunch ally to the president, telling the Washington Examiner he is “100% pro-Trump.”

“I was the first elected official in Georgia to call for a special session to review the fraud in the 2020 election — you can call me an election denier if you want to,” Moore told the Washington Examiner. “I was the first to go after Fani Willis in Atlanta when no one else would. I was kicked out of the Republican caucus for doing that to investigate and defund her. Busted up in the Atlanta airport in exposing illegal immigrants there, I guess that was the last year of Joe Biden’s presidency.”

“So I want to continue that fight, obviously to lower costs and lower taxes for everyday Americans,” Moore said.

Moore also said he would love to receive Trump’s endorsement in this election, but people in northwest Georgia “know us as Trump’s fighter over anyone else,” downplaying the need for the president’s backing to win. He also said he is not concerned about receiving Greene’s endorsement. She said in November that she would not back her congressional successor.

Moore also lamented Greene’s breakup with Trump, saying “no one” has set up more campaign signs for Greene or Trump than himself. He also said he appreciates both of them “very much,” and it is “extremely sad” that the two fell out as allies.

The Georgia lawmaker made headlines earlier this year when he was arrested trying to attend Gov. Brian Kemp’s (R-GA) State of the State address, despite being banned from the state House chamber. Moore’s ban originated from statements he made in 2024 about late Georgia House Speaker David Ralston, and Moore’s arrest split Georgia Republican leaders.

Greene has missed multiple roll-call votes since lawmakers returned from a Thanksgiving recess last week. She said Sunday that she has “zero plans” for a future in politics, including a possible presidential run, after she concludes her time in Congress.

Georgia law dictates that the governor must issue a writ of election to the secretary of state within 10 days of a vacancy in Congress, after which that election will be held within 30 days of this written command. This means the special election for Georgia’s 14th Congressional District will be held within weeks after Greene departs the House next month.
