Russia launched another wave of attacks into Ukraine overnight, killing six people and damaging city buildings and energy infrastructure throughout the country.
Over 460 drones and 22 missiles hit Ukraine on Tuesday morning, including in Kyiv, the country’s capital city, the Associated Press reported. Russia’s latest strike comes as Secretary of the Army Dan Driscoll met with Russian officials in Abu Dhabi to discuss the current 28-point peace proposal submitted by President Donald Trump last week.
The peace proposal has drawn considerable attention, both in terms of criticism and support, from elected officials both domestically and abroad. French President Emmanuel Macron was critical of Russia while discussing the current peace proposal, categorizing the country, at the behest of Russian President Vladimir Putin, as the only one that “doesn’t want peace.” Macron expressed support for the current peace proposal, saying that it “goes in the right direction” but emphasized that there was room for improvement.
“We want peace, but we don’t want a peace that is, in fact, a capitulation,” Macron said ahead of a planned video conference with European countries to discuss a potential ceasefire to the war. “That is to say it puts Ukraine in an impossible position, that in the end gives Russia the freedom to keep going, to go further.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky scolded Russia for the attack, as peace talks continued. He called for continued pressure on Russia as diplomats “moved toward diplomacy.”
“Right now in Kyiv, our first responders are working at the sites of Russian strikes,” Zelensky said in a post on X. “The main Russian attack overnight targeted the capital and the region, causing extensive damage to residential buildings and civilian infrastructure across the city. As of now, thirteen people are reported injured and, sadly, six killed.”
Zelensky also stressed that some of the targets in the attack were civilian areas with “no military purpose whatsoever.” He also mentioned that four Russian drones crossed into Romanian and Moldovan airspace, a phenomenon that has been happening more frequently throughout Europe in recent months.
“There is also destruction in the Odesa region – the ports, food supplies, and infrastructure were hit, with no military purpose whatsoever,” Zelensky said.
“They also struck Dnipro, Kharkiv, Chernihiv, and Cherkasy regions,” Zelensky said. “The primary targets were the energy sector and everything that keeps normal life going. In total, the Russians launched 22 missiles of various types, including aeroballistic ones, and more than 460 drones, most of them Russian-Iranian ‘shaheds.’ It is known that four drones crossed into the airspace of our neighbors – Moldova and Romania – with the exact overflight times confirmed.”
“This is precisely why all partners must remember that lives need to be saved every single day,” Zelensky said. “Weapons and air defense systems are important, as is the sanctions pressure on the aggressor. There can be no pauses in assistance.”
“What matters most now is that all partners move toward diplomacy together, through joint efforts,” he added. “Pressure on Russia must deliver results.”
