Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey defeats socialist Omar Fateh to win third term

Democratic Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey fended off socialist challenger Omar Fateh to win his third term in Tuesday’s 2025 election.

Frey was declared the winner on Wednesday after the election came down to ranked choice voting because neither candidate secured a majority of the vote.

After the first round, Frey led with 42% of votes compared to Fateh’s 32%. Other challengers also received a considerable amount of votes, including DeWayne Davis and Jazz Hampton, who got 14% and 10% of votes, respectively.

In the last round of voting, Frey finally achieved a slim majority, 50.03%, with 73,723 votes, compared to Fateh’s 65,377 votes.

Fateh conceded defeat in a post on X Wednesday.

“Thank you, Minneapolis! While this wasn’t the outcome we wanted, I am incredibly grateful to every single person who supported our grassroots campaign,” he wrote. “I’ll keep fighting alongside you to build the city we deserve. Onward.”

The Minneapolis mayoral race drew national attention over outcry about Fateh waving the Somali flag at a campaign rally, as well as his strong anti-Israel, socialist beliefs that have been compared to those held by New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani.

The Washington Examiner reached out to Frey and Fateh for comment.
