President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump held a Halloween event Thursday evening, handing out chocolate bars to trick-or-treaters at the White House.
The event on the South Lawn featured music from the Air Force Strolling Strings band, apples grown in Washington and New York states, and candy from the National Confectioners Association. The South Portico trick-or-treaters included Spider-Man, a banana, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt and her family, and two children in a wagon decked out as a McDonald’s drive-thru.
Presidents have been celebrating the spooky season at the White House since the Eisenhower administration. President John F. Kennedy and first lady Jackie Kennedy were the first first family to host trick-or-treaters at the White House, according to the White House Historical Association.
Donald Trump returned from his state trip to Asia hours before the event.
