Federal agent fires at moving vehicle during immigration stop in California

A federal agent fired his weapon after an illegal immigrant driver rammed two Customs and Border Protection agents at a traffic stop.

During an immigration stop in southern California, a driver refused to lower his window, then sped and rammed into two agents. According to a Department of Homeland Security statement, one of the agents fired his weapon in self-defense after the ramming, though no one was hit. DHS did not disclose any injuries to the agents.

Inland Coalition for Immigrant Justice Executive Director Javier Hernandez spoke to the driver, a 43-year-old Mexican who has been in the United States illegally for 23 years, and shared his experience with the Associated Press. The driver’s son and son-in-law, who were in the car with him, recorded part of the interaction.

In the video, viewed by the outlet, the driver refused to open the windows of the car when asked by the authorities. After the agents broke the windows, the driver accelerated his vehicle, after which three shots could be heard.

Local police went to the man’s residence but refused to arrest him due to state law that forbids law enforcement from cooperating with immigration authorities. Federal agents located the man’s house but were refused entry.

“This reckless decision came despite the subject’s outright refusal to comply and his wounding of two federal officers,” DHS said in a statement. “It is yet another tragic example of California’s pro-sanctuary policies that shield criminals instead of protecting communities.”

One of President Donald Trump’s central goals of his 2024 campaign was to carry out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history, an effort buoyed by a huge influx of funding from his One Big Beautiful Bill Act. His ramped-up deportation efforts have been combatted every step of the way by Democrats, particularly those in California.
