Patel reports 380 federal arrests since beginning of DC takeover

.

FBI Director Kash Patel said 380 people have been arrested in Washington, D.C., since President Donald Trump federalized the local police department and sent hundreds of federal law enforcement to the district.

The FBI is one of several agencies assisting in the federal takeover. More than 1,000 National Guard troops have been mobilized in the district.

Patel said the 29 arrests made by FBI agents on Sunday evening involved seven drug seizures, four firearm seizures, and charges for DUIs, drug offenses, assault, destruction of property, and other crimes.

Attorney General Pam Bondi celebrated the arrests, saying, “We are not slowing down.”

The DC Police Union, which has supported the federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department, said that over the past week, robberies were down 46%, carjackings were down 83%, violent crime was down 22%, and overall crime was down 8%.

The Washington Examiner could not independently verify these numbers, and the union did not respond to a request for comment.

The White House said Ohio, South Carolina, and West Virginia are sending National Guard reinforcements, bringing the total officers on duty in the district to 1,500.

Trump has said that the district’s “fake” crime statistics remain a problem as of Monday. MPD has been criticized in the past for how it reports crime statistics because it does not include unreported crimes and has been accused of recategorizing crimes.

However, Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser has maintained that crime in the district has decreased from its post-pandemic peak in 2023 and is continuing to trend downward.

District residents have been protesting federal law enforcement’s presence. “Free DC” chants were heard during the Washington Spirit’s match at Audi Field on Friday.

Bowser said in a Friday email to her constituents that the district is in “crisis” and commended residents for coming together.

“I know that if we keep sticking together, we will make it to the other side of this,” she said. “We will show the entire nation what it looks like to fight for American democracy — even when we don’t have full access to it.”
