Russia launched a drone and missile attack on a Ukrainian hospital and prison on Monday night, killing at least 21 people and wounding 80 others.
Russia’s assault on Ukraine included two Iskander-M ballistic missiles and 37 Shahed-type drones, according to the Associated Press. Ukraine’s Air Force claimed it intercepted 32 of the drones. The weapons hit the Bilenkivska Correctional Facility, destroying some buildings in the prison, including its dining hall.
No prisoners reportedly escaped, according to reports.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky discussed the attacks in a post on X.
“As of now, it is known that in just one past day – when everyone once again felt a sense of hope that the killing might stop – the Russian army killed 22 people in Ukraine,” Zelensky said in the social media post. “My condolences to their families and loved ones. Another 85 people were wounded. Seventy-three Ukrainian cities and villages came under Russian attack.”
“At 2 a.m. this night, the Russians launched a missile strike on the city of Kamyanske, targeting the city hospital,” he added. “Three people were killed in the attack, including a pregnant woman. Her name was Diana. She was only 23 years old.”
Russia also hit other sections of Ukraine, including a medical facility and a three-story building in the city of Kamianske, reported the Associated Press. The medical facility featured a maternity ward. There were two fatalities and five people wounded in this strike, one of whom was a pregnant woman.
Other drone attacks were reported in the city of Synelnykivskyi and the community of Velykomykhailivska, reported the Associated Press. A 75-year-old woman was killed, and a 68-year-old man was injured.
Zelensky condemned the attacks and harshly criticized Russia for the continued strikes that kill innocent civilians.
“Late yesterday, near midnight, Russian aircraft dropped bombs on the grounds of a correctional colony in the Zaporizhzhia region,” Zelensky said in the post. “It was a deliberate strike, intentional, not accidental. The Russians could not have been unaware that they were targeting civilians in that facility. Many were killed, and another 43 people were wounded, some of them with very severe injuries. And this was done after a completely clear position was voiced by the United States – a position supported by the world – that Russia must end this war and move to diplomacy.”
“Every killing of our people by the Russians, every Russian strike – at a time when a ceasefire could have long been in place, if not for Russia’s refusal – all of this shows that Moscow deserves very harsh, truly painful, and therefore just and effective sanctions pressure,” Ukraine’s president added. “They must be compelled to stop the killing and make peace.”
The strikes came hours after U.S. President Donald Trump said in Scotland on Monday that he was reducing his previously announced 50-day window for Russian President Vladimir Putin to end hostilities, military strikes, and agree to a peace deal with Ukraine. Trump adjusted his deadline due to Putin’s decision to keep bombing Ukraine instead of engaging in good-faith peace talks. Trump admitted he was disappointed in the Russian president.

“I’m disappointed in President Putin,” Trump said on Monday in Scotland.
“I’m going to reduce that 50 days we gave him to a lesser number because I think I already know the answer what’s going to happen,” the president added.
