Off-duty CBP officer shot by alleged illegal immigrant in apparent robbery attempt

An off-duty law enforcement official with U.S. Customs and Border Protection was shot Saturday in New York City in an apparent attempted robbery.

DHS said one of the alleged perpetrators is an illegal immigrant with “arrests for felony 2nd and 3rd degree assault and an order of deportation.”

“The first subject, is an illegal re-entry and has a warrant from Massachusetts for kidnapping. He is a final order from the Dominican Republic as of 2003,” Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for DHS, said.

The officer, 42, was shot in the face and the arm just before midnight Saturday at Fort Washington Park in Manhattan, according to New York City police. He is in the hospital and in stable condition.

The New York City Police Department is investigating.

One person is in custody, though charges have not been filed, and the NYPD has not released details on the individual.
