AOC and other Democrats float impeachment after Trump strikes Iran

.

House Democrats criticized President Donald Trump‘s decision to bomb Iranian nuclear sites on Saturday night, with two representatives now floating the idea of an impeachment of the president over the attack.

Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Sean Casten (D-IL) both suggested that impeachment should be on the table, with Ocasio-Cortez saying there are “clearly grounds” for it.

“The President’s disastrous decision to bomb Iran without authorization is a grave violation of the Constitution and Congressional War Powers. He has impulsively risked launching a war that may ensnare us for generations. It is absolutely and clearly grounds for impeachment,” Ocasio-Cortez posted on X.

Casten said in a separate statement that while House Democrats lack a majority to impeach Trump along party lines, “you DO NOT do this without Congressional approval,” including a direct rebuke of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).

“I’m not saying we have the votes to impeach. I’m saying that you DO NOT do this without Congressional approval and if Johnson doesn’t grow a spine and learn to be a real boy tomorrow we have a BFing problem that puts our very Republic at risk,” Casten posted on X.

Another House Democrat, Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), while not calling for impeachment, urged Congress to vote on the bipartisan resolution sponsored by Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Ro Khanna (D-CA) that was designed to keep Trump’s power in check on an Iran decision.

“The strikes on Iran, ordered by President Trump and executed without congressional authorization, mark a dangerous and reckless escalation of an already volatile conflict in the Middle East. … Congress must vote immediately on Rep. Thomas Massie and Sen. Tim Kaine’s War Powers resolutions when we return to session. The American people are tired of endless war. We need to end this madness before more lives are lost,” she said in a statement.

TRUMP SAYS US MILITARY ‘TOTALLY OBLITERATED’ IRAN’S NUCLEAR SITES IN WHITE HOUSE ADDRESS

The leader of the House Democrats, Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), issued a statement of his own, calling for a classified congressional briefing to be held “immediately” on the Iran strikes.

“First, the Trump administration bears the heavy burden of explaining to the American people why this military action was undertaken. Second, Congress must be fully and immediately briefed in a classified setting. Third, Donald Trump shoulders complete and total responsibility for any adverse consequences that flow from his unilateral military action,” he posted on X.
