This week’s Inside Scoop discusses an American papacy in the age of President Donald Trump, rekindling the U.S.-Canadian friendship, and a new Iran deal. Washington Examiner Magazine Executive Editor Jim Antle asks, “Can Trump succeed where Obama failed when it comes to a nuclear agreement?” Each week, the Washington Examiner brings to life the pages of the magazine with exclusive insight from the article authors.
This episode covers the effects of Trump on U.S.-Canada relations. Antle highlights Jeremy Lott’s article on how Trump’s rhetoric and personal relationships, particularly with former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and current Prime Minister Mark Carney, influence Canadian politics.
The cover story focuses on the new American pope. Timothy Nerozzi joins the show to discuss his trip to the Vatican to witness the election of Pope Leo. He explains how Leo was chosen out of a desire for a stabilizing figure to lead the Catholic Church, in contrast to the progressive personality of the late Pope Francis.
“The murmurs around Vatican City were that the key word was stability. We need stability,” Nerozzi said. “The word unity was thrown around, too, in various reactions. But there was a sense that Pope Francis, whether you love him, whether you hate him, whether you are indifferent to him, he was a pretty radical Pope, just in terms of his personality, his pastoral style, his governing style. There was a sense that there needed to be a sort of period of decompression, slowing things down just a little bit.

Lastly, Jamie McIntyre discusses Trump’s very possible mission to get an Iran deal that’s better than former President Barack Obama‘s. The in-depth report breaks down Trump’s efforts to negotiate a better Iran nuclear deal than the 2015 agreement. While both sides have made a lot of progress, the biggest stumbling block remains Iran’s insistence on being permitted to enrich uranium for a peaceful energy program.
