Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL) rebuffed recent comments by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) supporting his Democratic colleagues, who attended a protest opposing the Trump administration’s deportation of illegal immigrants.
Jeffries recently stated that officials would “find out” if Reps. Rob Menendez (D-NY), LaMonica McIver (D-NY), and Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NY) were arrested or sanctioned, as these three lawmakers were among the protesters the Department of Homeland Security said stormed a detention center in Newark, New Jersey, used by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In response, Britt reminded Jeffries that “no one is above the law,” a phrase commonly used by Democratic lawmakers against President Donald Trump.
“Hearing him, hearing Sen. Schumer, this is yet another Schumer show,” Britt explained on Fox News’s The Faulkner Focus. “Look, their words mean nothing. We saw them pick up for Biden saying that he was fine. You just covered it on your show. That was absolutely false and they knew it. They also know that these members were way out of bounds. Not only were they past the threshold of which they should be, but assaulting and pushing an ICE officer, there are consequences for that.”
The senator added that the “liberal wing” of the Democratic Party has overtaken it, adding that it is “a sad day” how the party is more focused on illegal immigrants over actual residents of the country. She also expressed hope the party can “wake up before it’s too late,” arguing that its current stance is not sustainable for the nation.
Following the ICE protest, Rep. Buddy Carter (R-GA) has introduced a resolution to revoke the committee assignments of the three Democratic lawmakers at the ICE facility. Carter told the Washington Examiner that this resolution is needed since “it preserves the rule of law and shows our brave law enforcement agents that we stand with them.”
McIver, Menendez, and Watson Coleman claimed in a joint statement that Carter’s resolution was “another attempt to distract” the public from Republican lawmakers.
Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was among the protesters at the ICE facility, who was arrested by police. DHS spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin has hinted that more arrests connected to this protest could follow.
