California Governor Gavin Newsom is calling on Canadians to visit the Golden State as President Donald Trump continues to strain United States-Canada relations with tariffs and strict border enforcement.
On Monday, Newsom released a video on social media expressing how his state and Canada have “always shared so much in common,” instructing Canadians not to let Trump “ruin” their beach plans.”
“California, it’s the ultimate playground, 2,000 miles from Washington, and a world away in mindset. From our iconic beaches and national parks to world class wine, food, and outdoor adventure, there’s something here for everyone,” Newsom said in the video.
Newsom shared that in 2024, nearly two million Canadians visited California. According to the governor’s office, tourists from Canada alone spent $3.72 billion in the Golden State.
Since Trump has come into office, he has mocked Canada and its political leaders, by calling it the 51st state, threatening to annex the country, and calling the then-prime minister “Governor Trudeau.” He has slapped Canada with 25% tariffs, and his administration has enforced stricter customs and border policies. As a result, Canada has issued a travel advisory to the United States. Canadians who plan to stay in the U.S. for more than 30 days must register their travels with the government, a previously unenforced rule.
