Colorado‘s radical bill that would make “misgendering” illegal and take child custody away from parents who do not buy into transgender delusions passed in both chambers. Now, it’s up to Gov. Jared Polis (D-CO) to decide whether it will become law. Will he prove more radical than Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA)?
Colorado Democrats decided that “deadnaming” or “misgendering” a child is a “type of coercive control” that can be used to decide child custody battles, in addition to releasing details about how doctors are transitioning the child. They also wanted to empower the Colorado Civil Rights Commission to target businesses that “misgender” or “deadname” transgender people, turning transgenderism into a cudgel to wield against businesses that do not conform to progressive orthodoxy. You only need to look at when the commission twice dragged a Christian baker to court at the behest of LGBT agitators to recognize that.
The bill will now head to Polis’s desk, offering an interesting juxtaposition with California. Similar to Colorado, California Democrats passed a bill that would enable judges to take children away from parents who do not want to transition their children. Newsom’s attempts to rebrand as a centrist on transgender matters are a sham, as he has led California down the transgender rabbit hole at every opportunity. Yet, this bill was even too far for Newsom, who ended up vetoing it.

The California bill was only about child custody hearings, which means Colorado went even further by targeting public accommodations for “civil rights” offenses against transgender people. Newsom clearly wants to run for president, which is why he did not want such a bill hung around his neck during a national campaign. However, Polis is in a similar position. He will be term-limited out of office in 2026, is a potential 2028 presidential candidate, and has tried to position himself as a national Democratic leader.
If Polis does not veto the bill, he will prove himself far more radical on this matter than even Newsom or the California Democratic legislature. He would be on the side of forced speech and transitioning children at any cost, making him (and the state of Colorado) indistinguishable from the ranting transgender activists who are trying to impose their incoherent, anti-child, anti-science worldview on the country.
