Podcast host Steve Bannon expressed confidence that President Donald Trump would run for president again in 2028, adding that he is “working” on finding ways to make this a reality despite presidential term limits.
Bannon dismissed the possibility of being a candidate, arguing he “already” endorsed the sitting president for reelection. He said Trump is a man who “comes along once every century” and that he wants to see the president continue to work on his vision for the nation.
NewsNation host Chris Cuomo then asked how Trump could seek reelection despite the two-term limit for U.S. presidents.
“We’re working on it,” Bannon said. “I think we’ll have a couple of alternatives, let’s say that. We’ll see what the definition of term limit is.”
Bannon further explained that the United States is in the midst of a “1932-type realignment,” saying minority voters such as Hispanics are voting Republican at a growing rate. Bannon’s comparison referred to how former President Franklin D. Roosevelt won the 1932 presidential election and then won the next three presidential elections.
“I firmly believe in the revolution you’re seeing going on now that the revolution of common sense to deconstruct the administrative state,” Bannon said. “You’re seeing that battle and that combat, politically and legally, in federal courts, every second, every day. And your audience, I know they love you, but they ought to start paying attention to also this greater arc of this massive fight that’s going on for the direction of this republic.”
Commentators Bill O’Reilly and Stephen A. Smith later joined Cuomo’s show to share their views on Bannon’s take, with the former deeming Trump running again in 2028 “a fantasy” that is “not going to happen.” He said Vice President JD Vance would likely run for the White House instead. Meanwhile, Smith was much more critical of Bannon’s suggestion. He questioned why supporters of Trump have “preached for decades upon decades about following the Constitution” only to turn around and try to “circumvent” it, pointing to how the Constitution’s 22nd Amendment says a U.S. president can only be elected twice.
“I’m very alarmed at it, and I don’t even think it’s going to happen myself,” Smith said. “But the gall, the audacity for him to come on national television and say such a thing, I think is incredibly alarming.”
DEMOCRATS START GAMING OUT 2028 ELECTION WEEKS INTO TRUMP’S SECOND TERM
It’s not the first time Bannon advocated for Trump to seek another presidential term in 2028. He pitched the idea last December at the New York Young Republican Club’s annual gala.
Commentator Tucker Carlson has suggested Vance would further Trump’s “legacy” in 2028, suggesting that the vice president is currently the only candidate capable of doing so. His comments came shortly after Vance became the first sitting vice president selected by the Republican National Committee to serve as its finance chairman.
