Trump appoints Charlie Kirk, Michael Flynn to military academy advisory boards

President Donald Trump announced his latest appointments on Monday, revealing his selections for advisory boards of the nation’s military academies in a post on Truth Social.

Among those selected for positions were political activist Charlie Kirk and former national security adviser Gen. Michael Flynn

“I am pleased to announce a new Board of Visitors for our Nation’s oldest Military Academy, West Point,” Trump said in his post. “Major General David Bellavia, Lieutenant General Dan Walrath, General Michael Flynn, Congressman Wesley Hunt, Maureen Bannon, and Meghan Mobbs are hereby appointed to the Board. They will make our Country proud. Congratulations to all!”

Bannon is the daughter of former White House strategist and current talk show host Steve Bannon. She graduated from West Point in 2010. Mobbs is the Center Director for the Independent Women’s Forum and graduated from West Point in 2008.

Trump’s appointments to the Naval Academy included his former valet and Navy veteran, Walt Nauta, and political strategist and former White House press secretary Sean Spicer.

“Completing my list of appointments to the United States Naval Academy, I am happy to announce that the full Board will consist of Sean Spicer, Walt Nauta, Congressman ‘Doc Ronnie’ Jackson, Congressman Derek Van Order, Senator Tim Sheehy, and Earl Ehrhart,” Trump said.

Trump concluded his string of posts announcing military academy advisory boards with his selections for the Air Force Academy. Among his appointments was Charlie Kirk, a puzzling choice given that Kirk has no military experience or college degrees.

“Our Great United States Air Force Academy will soon have an incredible Board of Visitors, composed of Doug Nikolai, Dan Clark, Senator Tommy Tuberville, Charlie Kirk, and Dina Powell,” Trump posted

The Board of Visitors serves a distinct purpose at each military academy. For the Air Force, the BOV “inquires into the morale, discipline, curriculum, instruction, physical equipment, fiscal affairs, academic methods, and other matters relating to the Academy which the Board decides to consider.”

At West Point, the BOV “serves in an advisory capacity to the United States Military Academy (USMA) at West Point,” focusing on various matters, including “quality of life issues, character development, military and physical programs, athletics, and admissions.” The BOV serves similar functions at the Naval Academy, inquiring into “the state of morale and discipline, the curriculum, instruction, physical equipment, fiscal affairs, and academic methods.
