Commentator Tucker Carlson said Vice President JD Vance is the only person who can further President Donald Trump’s agenda past his second presidential term, claiming that “there’s no one else.”
Carlson made that assessment when discussing the 2028 presidential election, saying Trump likely wants to leave “a legacy” once he leaves the White House. While Trump stopped short of endorsing Vance for a presidential bid, Carlson said he felt that Vance is the only person who can not only maintain Trump’s presidential legacy but also work at “expanding it.”
“I think his loyalty is without question, and his service to Trump has been profound,” Carlson said in a discussion on The Vince Show. “I’m assuming that was, you know, just like a phrase that you feel you have to use.”
Vince Coglianese, the host of the show, suggested that Trump could have been “protecting” Vance by withholding his endorsement last month, which Carlson argued is “probably right.” Carlson added that “a lot” will happen between now and the 2028 election.
Ahead of that election, Carlson said “the real battle” being fought is between those who prioritize the United States and those who care about “the fortunes of foreign countries,” naming former Republican presidential candidate Nikki Haley as an example. He added that a leader of a nation is ultimately in charge of the well-being of his people and contended that while the U.S.’s leaders “have not been that way,” it will change.
“And I think, already, you know, it’s a tough gig for any vice president, the sitting one included, but I think already JD Vance has been … a powerful partner, subordinate partner, not co-equal partner because he’s the vice president, but he has been a powerful partner for Trump,” Carlson said. “I don’t see any other, at this point, as of today, any other conceivable option. I think JD Vance will be the nominee.”

Former Sen. Mitt Romney has also speculated that Vance will be the Republican Party’s presidential nominee in 2028 because Republicans have become the “party of the working-class, middle-class voter.”
Vance was recently selected by the Republican National Committee to serve as its finance chairman, marking the first time a sitting vice president has held the role. He succeeds Richard “Duke” Buchan III, whom Trump nominated to serve as the U.S. ambassador to Morocco.
