North Korea vows to ‘update and strengthen’ its nuclear capabilities

.

North Korea has vowed it will increase its nuclear capabilities, the country’s Foreign Ministry announced on Monday. The bold statement by the communist country comes after diplomats at the recent G7 foreign ministers’ meeting demanded that North Korea halt its nuclear weapons program.

“We demanded that the DPRK abandon all its nuclear weapons and any other weapons of mass destruction as well as ballistic missile programs in accordance with all relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions,” read a joint statement released by the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. “We expressed our serious concerns over, and the need to address together, the DPRK’s cryptocurrency thefts. We called on DPRK to resolve the abductions issue immediately.”

The North Korean government has asserted that it will never relinquish its nuclear capabilities and that having such weapons is embedded in its laws, with North Korea’s Foreign Ministry declaring it is  “fixed permanently by the supreme law of its state.”

“The DPRK’s nuclear-armed forces will exist forever as a powerful means of justice which defends the sovereignty of the state, territorial integrity and fundamental interests, prevents a war in the Korean peninsula and Northeast Asia and guarantees a strategic stability of the world,” officials from North Korea said in a statement to the state-run Korean Central News Agency.

“The DPRK will steadily update and strengthen its nuclear-armed forces both in quality and quantity in response to the nuclear threat from outside,” the DPRK added.

Furthermore, North Korea claimed that its nuclear program is an integral part of its defense program. Officials said the weapons are a deterrence to “war in the Korean peninsula and Northeast Asia and guarantees a strategic stability of the world,” according to ABC News
