Debt limit negotiations between House Republicans and the White House resume

Debt ceiling negotiations between the White House and Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) team resumed Friday evening after they were paused earlier that morning.
Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee Patrick McHenry (R-NC) said, “At the speaker’s request, we’re going back in, and we’re going to keep talking.” But he said he is not confident that a deal could be reached this weekend. The speaker has previously expressed he wanted a deal to happen by the end of the weekend so the House and Senate could have time to pass it. The Senate is on recess all of next week.

“The goal is to get a bill that will pass the House of Representatives and the Senate and [be] signed by the president,” McHenry said. “We have done our job. We passed a bill to raise the debt ceiling that addresses Americans’ needs and cuts public spending. It’s the terms by which this whole negotiation is occurring, and we’ll reiterate that.”
He declined to comment on why negotiations fell through or specifically what they were discussing.

Shortly after McHenry walked into the negotiation room, White House negotiators Shalanda Young, director of the Office of Management and Budget, and Steve Ricchetti, senior adviser to the president, were seen walking into the room. Neither of them answered any questions. McCarthy’s chief negotiator, Rep. Garret Graves (R-LA), is also in the room.
Graves declined to answer any questions. McCarthy left the Capitol early Friday evening and is not expected to return, according to a source familiar.
