New York has become an increasingly interesting election option for Republicans over the last two election cycles, making the incompetence of Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) all the more glaring.
Hochul is the country’s most politically inept governor east of California, having inherited the job after Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s scandals and escaping a competitive race with former Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin in 2022 in a state that Democrats are used to winning easily. In the 2024 presidential election, Vice President Kamala Harris’s margin over President-elect Donald Trump in New York was closer than Trump’s margins over Harris in Florida and Texas, two states Democrats convince themselves are competitive. Democratic control over New York is not as solid as it once appeared.
Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-NY) is now warning that Hochul may be the “new” President Joe Biden, painting her as a weak candidate who is unaware of her political “vulnerabilities.” Hochul most notably pushed through an unpopular congestion pricing plan that she previously blocked, waiting until after the election to spring it on people to try and avoid angering the voters whom House Democrats needed to win over across the state. Hochul’s favorable rating as of September is an all-time low at 34%, with her unfavorable rating at 54%.

Making lives for voters more expensive and having a favorability rating that is 20 points underwater? That does sound a lot like Biden.
Hochul has already signaled that she will oppose Trump on immigration. Yet, she is now complaining that Biden is cutting office hours at northern border crossings to redirect resources to the southern border. Hochul, who helps encourage illegal immigrants to cross the border by declaring New York as a sanctuary state, is saying her poor state is being overrun at the Canadian border, and Biden has already “achieved measurable success” at the southern border and should stop worrying so much about it.

Oh, and Hochul said Republicans who support Trump are anti-women and anti-American. Disparaging half the country while you yourself are wildly unpopular? She really is just like Biden.
Hochul got handed the governorship of the second-biggest Democratic state in the country and almost immediately handed it to a Republican because she has terrible political instincts and sticks to Democratic dogma on immigration and taxes while ignoring that the lives of New Yorkers are getting worse. Hochul is a terrible candidate and an even worse governor, and New Yorkers should begin looking elsewhere for someone to run their state.
