It’s not an exaggeration to say Denver Mayor Mike Johnston is radically left-wing. His record as a politician has proven that. However, if there was any remaining doubt, his recent comments about his intentions to defy boldly the Trump administration’s policies on illegal immigrants were a fresh reminder.
Johnston stated he would not comply with any federal orders to deport illegal immigrants and implied he would go to great lengths to do so, even if it meant a confrontation between Denver police officers and national guardsmen. However, his delusion of grandeur did not stop there, as Johnston described a situation in which this hypothetical confrontation would be equivalent to Tiananmen Square. Furthermore, he predicted tens of thousands of people would gather in the streets to prevent these deportations from happening.
“More than us having DPD stationed at the county line to keep them out, you would have 50,000 Denverites there,” Johnston said. “It’s like the Tiananmen Square moment with the rose and the gun. … You’d have every one of those Highland moms who came out for the migrants. You don’t want to mess with them.”
This is sheer lunacy, and Johnston’s statement is fanatical. First, comparing a hypothetical standoff in which the Trump administration would be enforcing federal law is a stark contrast to a student-led resistance against the oppression of the Chinese communist government. Second, there would not be 50,000 people protesting against such an action. This is just more unhinged fanaticism flowing from Johnston’s brain. There is a better chance of every day of Denver’s winter having a weather forecast of 80 degrees and sunny skies than 50,000 people doing what Johnston suggested.
However, Johnston’s statements are indicative of Democrats’ obsession with prioritizing illegal immigrants, even at the expense and the safety of natural citizens. Moreover, it is yet another example of their genuine disdain for democracy as they have repeatedly shown they have no intention of adhering to democracy when democracy in action runs counter to their left-wing ideological principles. Johnston reinforced as much when he claimed he wouldn’t let the incoming Trump administration change his city’s “core values” of helping illegal immigrants break federal law.
“The short answer is we won’t change that because those are one of our core values,” Johnston said during an interview on Friday. “And we’re not going to sell out those values to anyone. We’re not going to be bullied into changing them.”

But Johnston is mistaken. Upholding federal law is not equivalent to “being bullied.” Suggesting such fully displays Johnston’s flawed thought process and, quite possibly, his interest in totalitarianism. Democracy is about following rules and laws, a phenomenon that Johnston seems to support if, and only if, those rules and laws align with his beliefs. Except that’s not how this country works.
Like many other Democrats, Johnston regularly whined about the need to protect democracy. Yet, by his own words, it is evident that he has every intention of doing what he can to threaten and attack democracy. His ideals are fueled by sanctimony and a self-righteous attachment to his political and ideological preferences, not an affection for democracy or the rule of law.
